Short Definitions of Art

Art: something created and crafted for the mind and body that carries special significance (emotional, intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic, metaphoric, symbolic, societal, or political).


Music: the outcome of creative effort as a means of expression of sound in time, appreciated aurally.


Visual Art: the outcome of creative effort as a means of expression appreciated by sight.


Literature: the outcome of creative effort as a means of expression using meaning and ideas.


Drama: the outcome of creative effort as a means of shared expression using narrative, music, sound, and light.


Film: a collaborative outcome of creative effort as a means of expression using narrative, cinematography, lighting, music, sound design, and everything that appears in each frame (actors, set design, dance, costumes, CGI, special effects).


Dance: the outcome of creative effort as a means of expression using the body, stillness, and movement in time.


Ceramic Art: the outcome of choosing, shaping, then bringing materials and glazes up to a high temperature to create pottery, earthenware, porcelain, and brick, and that the resulting objects hold significance for the mind and body, rather than being practically useful.

Sculpture: the outcome of creative effort as a means of expression to create three dimensional objects that are appreciated through sight, touch, and sound.


Photography: the act of taking a picture with the aid of a device that records light, with particular care given to composition and creative transformation of the image.
